Getting an interview is hard. Blowing it because you weren't prepared is devastating. This guide covers everything — from researching the company to handling salary negotiations — so you walk in confident and walk out with an offer.

Before the Interview: Research Phase

1. Research the Company Deeply

  • Read their "About", "Mission", recent press releases and blog posts
  • Check Glassdoor reviews for interview insights
  • Follow their LinkedIn to see recent announcements
  • Know their main products, competitors, and target customers

2. Understand the Job Description

Print or copy the JD. Highlight every skill and responsibility. Prepare one story for each major requirement using the STAR method.

The STAR Method: Answer Any Behavioral Question

Situation — Set the scene. Task — What was your responsibility? Action — What did YOU specifically do? Result — What was the measurable outcome?

Example for "Tell me about a time you handled a difficult situation": "In my internship at XYZ, our production server went down 2 hours before a major client demo (S). I was tasked with debugging and restoring service (T). I traced the issue to a memory leak in a recent deploy and rolled back (A). We restored service in 45 minutes and the demo proceeded successfully (R)."

20 Most Common Interview Questions

  • Tell me about yourself
  • Why do you want this role?
  • What's your greatest strength?
  • What's your greatest weakness?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • Why are you leaving your current job?
  • Describe a challenge you overcame
  • Tell me about a time you worked in a team
  • What's your biggest achievement?
  • How do you handle feedback?

Salary Negotiation: Don't Leave Money on the Table

Never give a number first if you can avoid it. When asked, respond: "I'm looking for a compensation package in line with the market rate for this role and my experience. What's the budgeted range for this position?"

If given a range and it's low: "Based on my X years of experience with [specific skills], I was expecting something closer to [your number]. Is there flexibility there?"

Questions to Ask the Interviewer

  • What does success look like in this role in the first 90 days?
  • What are the biggest challenges the team is facing right now?
  • How does the team handle disagreements or conflicting priorities?
  • What opportunities for growth are available after this role?
